At present the free editions of database software do not have comparative benchmark data. So when Eric Vercelleto performed an independent TPC-C like benchmark test on the free edition of Informix, Innovator-C, Oninit Group jumped at the chance to write an article which draws attention to these impressive results. The stress test was based on the TPC-Benchmark developed by Professor Diego R Llanos and his team of students at the Universidad de Valladolid, Spain. It was run by hosting the application and database server on the small Linux server. It will come as no surprise for Informix users to hear that Innovator-C passed with outstanding results. Next, Eric attempted a more expensive client/server configuration to really push the Informix database to its limits. The results were broadly the same with a mere 15-20% average user CPU over a 550 terminal session. This test proves that Informix is the most hardware-efficient database on the market and, with Innovator-C significantly cheaper per transaction than alternative relational database management systems, paves the way for smaller companies to benefit from Informix without the cost burden.
